After reading lots of positive reviews for Escali brand scales, but reading several reviews that complained about lightweight plastic that the cheaper ($19.95) models were made of, I opted to purchase this $60 model, thinking it would be constructed of more solid and durable materials. To my surprise, the base is made of disappointingly flimsy plastic that has been painted silver; only the top (removable) platform is made of stainless steel. When the (brand new) unit arrived, the silver paint on the base was already scratched and the corners on the stainless steel platform were slightly rippled as if they hadn’t been machined well. The plastic battery compartment on the bottom didn’t stay closed until I gently pulled on the plastic tab to create counter-pressure. The unit is labeled “Made in China.” Overall the unit performs very well, but I still feel like I’ve been ripped off. I’d have felt perfectly happy and given this 5 stars if either (a) it had cost $25 or (b) the whole unit were made of higher quality materials.
